Lafarge Surma Cement project

World leader in building materials Lafarge of France and renowned Spanish cement producer Cementos Molins have set up a state-of-the-art fully integrated cement plant at Chhatak, Sunamganj in north east Bangladesh. It is a unique project as the raw materials—limestone and shale are being brought from the quarry across the international border in East Khasi Hills in Meghalaya (India) by a 17 kilometer long belt conveyor.

The project has a 30 MW captive power plant that ensures uninterrupted energy supply.

Besides Lafarge and Cementos Molins as major sponsors, the equity partners are Asian Decelopment Bank (ADB), International Finance Corporation (IFC), and Islam Group and Sinha Group from Bangladesh. The financiers to the project include Asian Development Bank (ADB), International Finance Corporation (IFC), German Development Bank (DEG), European Investment Bank (EIB), the Netherlands Development Company (FMO) and local Standard Chartered Bank and Arab-Bangladesh Bank.
